Bryanston resident takes city maintenance into his own hands

As the City of Johannesburg municipal services continue to fall short, Bryanston resident Leonardo Lupini is choosing action over frustration, personally organising and funding maintenance to keep his neighbourhood safe and well maintained.

In a time when municipal maintenance across Johannesburg is increasingly stretched, one Bryanston resident, Leonardo Lupini, has chosen action over frustration.

Known in his community for consistently stepping up, Lupini recently dispatched his team to the Ballyclare Drive Bridge to cut back overgrown foliage and tall grass, restoring visibility and improving safety for road users and pedestrians alike.
The work forms part of a broader, ongoing effort by Lupini to maintain areas in and around his neighbourhood.

From cutting verges and cleaning public spaces to filling paving damaged after pipe bursts and even purchasing paving when required, his hands-on approach reflects a deep personal commitment to maintaining standards in the area he calls home.

Lupini said his motivation came from witnessing small but meaningful acts by others. “I saw another resident picking up litter, so I decided to assist her.” That simple moment sparked a mindset that would grow into consistent community action.

A more pressing trigger followed. “When I saw unattended long grass, knee high over the way from my residence, I just decided to do it myself. With recent heavy rains worsening conditions, waiting for intervention was no longer an option.”

For Lupini, community upkeep is not about filling gaps or temporarily replacing municipal services; it’s about maintaining standards. He added that the satisfaction comes from knowing he has contributed, even in a small way, to improving the environment around him. “I feel satisfied that I am able to help in making the area in which I live look slightly better.”

While he acknowledges that much of the work he undertakes would ordinarily fall under municipal responsibility, he says the challenges are minimal. “I don’t really face any challenges, just the fact that I wish the municipality would attend more often.”

Reflecting on the broader picture, he said: “When one looks around, the municipal services are not as they were, say, ten years ago.

“It’s frustrating to see stuff like litter and grass cutting neglected, especially with the rains we’ve been experiencing. I would rather just attend to it, than wait for it to get done, one less thing for me to worry about.”
