The Sandton CPF warns residents and commuters to be extra vigilant as vehicle break-ins and street robberies surged in Sandton’s Sector 1 during the first week of January, with Woodmead and Sunninghill emerging as key hotspots.

As Sandton winds down for the day, crime appears to be clocking in.

Late afternoons and early evenings have emerged as a key risk periods for residents and commuters in Sandton’s Sector 1, following a spike in vehicle break-ins and street robberies during the first full week of January.

According to the Sandton Community Policing Forum’s (CPF) latest crime trend report, covering January 5 to 11, Sector 1 recorded the highest number of reported incidents in the precinct.

The sector includes Edenburg, Gallo Manor, Rivonia, Sunninghill, and Woodmead, areas known for their mix of residential estates, office parks, and shopping nodes.

The most common offence was theft out of motor vehicles, with criminals targeting parking areas during busy afternoon hours. The CPF reports that suspects often used signal-jamming devices to prevent cars from locking, or smashed windows to gain quick access.

Laptops, cell phones, and other electronic devices left inside vehicles are the preferred loot, but cars are not the only targets. The statement said that common robbery incidents, involving pedestrians and joggers being approached and verbally threatened, with cell phones stolen are also on the rise.

Woodmead and Sunninghill emerged as the main hotspots, with most incidents taking place between 16:00 and 19:59. Mondays were identified as the day with the highest concentration of reported cases during the week under review.

In contrast, Sectors 2, 3, and 4 did not show any dominant crime patterns over the same period.

The CPF has urged residents and visitors to take extra precautions, especially during peak afternoon hours.
