Brescia House tennis player serves up third national selection

Not for the first time, not for the second, but for the third time, Aarya Sunker will proudly don the green and gold after earning selection to the South African schools U17 tennis team.

At just 15 years old, Aarya Sunker is already making her mark as one of South Africa’s most promising young tennis players.

The talented Brescia House School learner has been selected for the South African Schools U17 tennis team, following an outstanding performance while representing Gauteng Central at the U17 interprovincial tournament (IPTs) in Pretoria.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is that it is Aarya’s third national selection, having previously represented South Africa at U13 and U15 level. Her continued progression through the age groups is a powerful testament to her consistency, growth, and determination.

“I felt incredibly proud and grateful,” Aarya said of her latest selection. “Being selected is something I’ve been training and working towards for the year leading up to the IPTs. It’s a reminder that the hard work is paying off.”

Aarya’s tennis journey has been one of steady development and personal growth. Since her first national call-up at U13 level, she has transformed, both as an athlete and as an individual. “As a player, I’ve become more disciplined, physically stronger, and tactically smarter. As a person, I’ve learned resilience, patience, and how to handle both wins and losses more maturely.”

Training most days of the week at Advantage Academy, Aarya’s schedule is intense and demanding. Her training includes technical sessions, match play, fitness work, strength and conditioning, recovery, and mental preparation.

Despite the pressures of elite sport, she successfully balances her tennis commitments with her academics, something she credits to strong support from her school. “It takes good time management and planning. Brescia House is very supportive, which helps a lot. They encourage excellence in all areas, and that really allows me to grow.”

Like any high-performance athlete, Aarya has faced her share of challenges, from injuries to tough losses and the pressure of expectations. Learning to manage these moments has been a defining part of her journey. “Those experiences have taught me resilience and mental strength. I focus on staying calm, trusting my training, and taking each point, one at a time.”

What keeps her motivated is simple, but powerful: A genuine love for the sport. “I enjoy challenging myself and seeing how far I can go.”

Beyond competition and results, Aarya values the discipline tennis teaches, the friendships she’s made, and the opportunity to travel and experience new environments.

Looking ahead, Aarya hopes to continue climbing through the junior ranks, gaining international exposure, and competing at higher levels, all while continuing her education.

For young learners dreaming of national colours, her advice is clear. “Believe in yourself, work hard, stay consistent, and enjoy the journey. Don’t be afraid to learn from challenges.”
