The Ryu Ken Chi (RKC) Dojo marked a major milestone in 2025, celebrating 10 years since its beginnings as the Rivonia Kendo Club at the Rivonia Sports Club in Paulshof.

What began in February 2015 as a small kendo group has grown into the largest kendo dojo in South Africa, now offering kendo, iaido, and jodo across two Johannesburg locations.

This anniversary year reflected the dojo’s journey: Moments of pride balanced with difficult losses. Among the major achievements was the dojo’s representation on South Africa’s national teams at three European championships.

Members travelled to the European Kendo Championships in the Netherlands, the European Jodo Championships in Poland, and the European Iaido Championships in the Czech Republic.

The dojo also continued to draw visiting martial artists from Finland, Germany, Greece, Madagascar, Scotland, Switzerland, and the UK.

Head sensei Warren Ho was also invited to conduct a kendo seminar in Mauritius, adding to the club’s international connections.

Members showcased their skills at high-profile events, including the TCA Chinese New Year Festival, the Japanese Festival at Menlyn Maine, the National Koi Show, Saheti School, and the annual Japanese Spring Festival.

The dojo also had a strong presence at ComicCon Johannesburg, introducing thousands of visitors to the disciplines.

A highlight of the year was the 10th anniversary gala at the German Country Club, where members, families, and friends celebrated the dojo’s journey, looking ahead to the next decade.

The year also brought sorrow.

The dojo mourned the loss of James Miller, a beloved member who passed away after a short battle with cancer. A memorial was held at Rivonia Sports Club. Several other members left the dojo during the year, a reminder of how change affects any close-knit community.

Ho said the dojo’s values helped steady the group through the highs and lows. “Our motto: Koken chiai, reminds us that through the love of the sword, we aim to better humanity. That principle kept us grounded throughout a turbulent year.”

He added that discipline, respect, and consistent training remain at the heart of what the dojo hopes to offer the wider community.
