Sandton water system under strain as key reservoirs reach critical levels

Johannesburg Water has once again appealed to consumers to practise responsible water use as pressure on the city’s infrastructure continues, warning that high demand during periods of constrained supply increases the risk of outages.

Johannesburg Water has confirmed that the Sandton water system is still under severe strain due to poor incoming supply, with several reservoirs and towers at critically low levels and others showing signs of steady decline.

In a statement update issued on January 29 at 12:30, the utility said interventions are currently underway to stabilise the network and assist with recovery. These include the temporary closure of outlets and the isolation of pumping systems to retain capacity.

According to the update, both the Illovo reservoir and Illovo tower are critically low, with outlets set to be closed to allow levels to recover.

The Randjieslaagte reservoir is also reported to be low, with residents in the area advised to expect poor pressure or no water at all.

The Bryanston system presents a mixed picture. While the Bryanston reservoir is still supplying water, levels are declining, and pumping at the Bryanston tower is expected to resume around midday.

Other areas, including Morningside, Linbro Park, and Marlboro, are currently supplying fairly, but with declining levels and warnings of poor pressure, particularly for direct feed connections.

The Dunkeld reservoir is operating on bypass and is supplying water fairly for now.

Johannesburg Water said the constraints are linked to insufficient incoming supply into the Sandton system. “Interventions are underway, including closing outlets and isolating pumping to retain capacity, stabilise the system, and assist in recovery.”
