Johannesburg Zoo celebrates 121 years of wildlife conservation with monthly Zoo Trot
The Johannesburg Zoo is excited to announce its 121st birthday this year, celebrating over a century of dedicated wildlife conservation, education, and community engagement.
As part of this celebration, the zoo will continue its popular Johannesburg Zoo Trot, a monthly fun run event that invites participants of all ages to enjoy a unique experience running through the zoo while observing its diverse animal inhabitants.

Founded in 1904, the Johannesburg Zoo was established when 200ac of land were generously donated to the people of Johannesburg. This land not only formed Zoo Lake but also became the home for a small collection of animals, which laid the foundation for what is now a world-renowned institution.

Today, the zoo spans 54ha and is home to over 320 species, housing more than 2 000 animals.

The Johannesburg Zoo is globally recognized for its exceptional husbandry practices, high standards of animal welfare, nutrition, and ethical conduct. Among its impressive residents are two white rhinos, seven lions, two Siberian tigers, and a polar bear, alongside many other fascinating species. The zoo also proudly cares for its oldest resident, a 40-year-old Shetland pony.

The Johannesburg Zoo Trot takes place on the second Sunday of every month, offering participants the chance to run or walk through the lush landscapes of the zoo, experiencing the sights and sounds of wildlife up close.
Participants will have the thrill of seeing their favourite animals, including the Big Five, while enjoying a fun-filled run. This family-friendly event is suitable for all ages, catering to both professional runners and casual joggers. Participants can choose between a 5km or 10km distance, making it accessible for everyone.

Regular exercise provides numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, enhanced mood, and reduced risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. The Johannesburg Zoo Trot is an excellent opportunity for participants to engage in physical activity, helping them achieve these health benefits while enjoying a fun day out.
Additionally, being part of a community event fosters social connections, enhancing mental well-being and creating a sense of belonging among participants.
Proceeds from the zoo trot are vital for the ongoing care of the animals at the zoo, including purchasing necessary medication for the veterinary team. This ensures that the zoo can maintain its high standards of animal welfare and continue its conservation efforts.
Furthermore, by participating in this event, attendees contribute to the preservation of local wildlife and habitats, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in conservation.

Participants can enjoy safe, on-site parking, making it convenient for families and friends to join in the fun. After the run, attendees are welcome to stay in the zoo and enjoy a picnic, making it a perfect day out. The zoo encourages participants to explore its various exhibits and learn more about the animals they are supporting through their participation.
