Willy Wonka and Charlie visit Michael Mount with friends

Grade 8 learners of Michael Mount Waldorf School get a standing ovation after their stellar performance of the classic novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Michael Mount Waldorf School has never shied away from allowing all of its learners to think critically and be themselves.

Through their annual tradition that promotes both growth and a smooth transition from primary to secondary, learners of Grade 8 showcased their adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Throughout the entire course of the production on October 27, each learner on stage carefully mirrored their characters with great ease and confidence.

From the main character of Charlie Bucket played by Rishaan Gupta to the cute little Oompa Loompa minions, the play had everything to offer the audience.

In a short description, the play follows a young boy, Charlie, who receives an opportunity of a lifetime to meet the most famous chocolatier in the world, Willy Wonka, at his factory which has never been open to the public.

Luca Amerseder as an interviewer interviews Violet Beauregard and Mrs Beauregard being played by Lana Schreyer and Ciara Grubb.

As amazing as it sounds, Charlie is met up with external challenges in the form of four other children who received the exact same opportunity as he did but have entirely different motives for their visit.

One of the highlights of the play was the big reveal of the factory which left audiences in a state of shock. Despite not having the real chocolate river just like in the movie, the factory was well constructed. The presence of the stage crew and live music allowed each scene to transition smoothly as new characters entered the stage.

“There’s a process where the teachers have to decide as a whole what would be the best play for the learners, both educationally and something that they can engage with. The two-and-a-half weeks of preparations were challenging, but I was amazed at how dedicated and focused these children were. I thank Yvonne de Leeuw who is their guardians and everyone that played a part in making this production alive,” said the director, Welma de Beer.
