Taking care of Cumberland Bird Sanctuary
Locals in Bryanston show their love for their local park, Cumberland Bird Sanctuary, by clearing litter around the park.
As part of honouring Earth Day and doing good for the community, locals and Deloitte teams gathered at the Cumberland Bird Sanctuary for a clean-up.
A successful afternoon cleaning up the park ended with 15 or more trash bags full of litter and debris.

Nick Brown, the organiser of the clean-up, said over the years residents have been trying to keep the bird sanctuary clean by removing certain vegetation to attract more birds.
“What we are doing today is creating awareness among the residents that the Cumberland Bird Sanctuary needs attention and cleaning to show its beauty once it is clean.”

He explained that the clean-up today will focus on picking up rubbish, and as time goes by, they will come back to removing alien plants, clearing the dam, and making the sanctuary alive again, as this goes far beyond just picking up rubbish.
“We call on all community members to please help in the cleaning of Cumberland Bird Sanctuary, either by paying gardeners, donating gloves and hats, plastic bags, litter pickers, cross-cut hand saws, fuel-powered chainsaws and weed trimmers, rakes, spades, forks, and wheelbarrows.”

Brown thanked the Deloitte teams, community members, and City Parks for being involved in the first small step of rehabilitating their bird sanctuary.
