Originally established in the 1950s as a countryside tearoom providing a cherished stopover between Joburg and Pretoria. The Protea Hotel by Marriott Hotel Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton, home to Lords Bar, has a history that predates the flashy skyscrapers of Sandton’s business district.

According to Natalie Botha, General Manager of the Protea Hotel by Marriott, the bar stands as a testament to the history of Sandton, having been one of the area’s first bars and pioneering the concept of a ladies’ bar, in a time when such establishments were rare. It sits on a piece of land that once housed a unique tearoom, welcoming travellers to Sandton for trade.

“With the completion of the comprehensive renovation, Lords Bar has been reimagined to offer an ambience that is both classic and contemporary, captivating guests from the moment they step inside.”

She added that their goal was to breathe new life into Lords Bar while preserving its historical significance.
