Bryanston Primary exhibits Tickey Day Amazingness
Bryanston Primary School carries on with 60-year-old traditional school event.
In keeping up with the school’s traditions, Bryanston Primary School hosted parents and the community for this year’s Tickey Day – hosted at the school on September 2.
The event was an entrepreneurial day characterised by turning the field into a carnival – with amusement-themed activities, treats, and a Ferris wheel. Traditionally, Tickey Day is arranged by the Grade 7 learners.
“It’s a Grade 7 initiative fundraiser for the school towards projects,” said school principal, Morne Marx. “Currently, we’re working towards a multi-purpose court that we’re going to start building in September.”
According to the Grade 7 economic and management sciences teacher Bernard Maseko, the idea of Tickey Day has since grown into a long-standing tradition whereby the Grade 7 group would be able to give the school something back by which they could be remembered.
“All money raised goes to the school,” Maseko said. “What’s interesting is that it’s no longer simply a fundraising event – the economic and management sciences is a practical subject which equips the learners with real-life skills for personal development, and the development of the community as well.”
Maseko shared a brief history of what Tickey Day is.
“Tickey began in the early 60s when South Africa still used the monetary system of pounds, shillings and pence,” said Maseko. “Inflation had not yet set in – and you could actually purchase something of value for a tickey.”
