Sandton CPFs out and about

Sandton Community Protection and Sector 1 CPF members reached out to their hyper-local communities towards fostering social cohesion.

The Gallo Manor Wendywood Community Protection network hosted a relaxed market day at Umtata Park on October 14.

This community-powered initiative was hosted in close collaboration with partners joining hands with their communities towards eradicating unemployment, among other social concerns.

Tackling unemployment is the approach taken by Najen Naidoo, a representative of event co-organiser Smart Communities, towards alleviating some of the strain impacting civic maintenance.

“Everyone says security is a problem, and service delivery is a problem; but we actually believe that unemployment is a big problem in South Africa,” said Naidoo.
“With unemployment being tackled, crime will come down. Service delivery will also go up, because people will pay their taxes.”

Gallo Manor Wendywood Community Protection has been hosting events such as this one for 30 years.

“We’ve seen a tremendous improvement in our security and safety from statistics, from improvement of values of properties in the area, and just happiness,” said Gallo Manor Wendywood Community Protection chairman Peter Ochola.
“It’s a credit to the residents and their ability to come together and be the eyes and ears.”

At the same time, a stone’s throw away, Sandton’s Sector 1 CPF operated information stands as a part of their community outreach road show at Woodmead Retail Centre. This event was characterised by three information stalls: Sector 1 CPF, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and the SaferCity, the progressive security operator.
