Sandton City advances sustainable energy practices with innovative wheeling solutions

In a significant move towards its Net Zero Carbon 2030 goal, Sandton City announces the installation of a 1MW solar roof structure and innovative energy procurement strategies.

In a progressive move toward achieving its ambitious Net Zero Carbon 2030 target, Sandton City has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and promoting sustainable practices.

Key among these is the installation of a 1MW solar photovoltaic roof structure and smart-metering systems to better understand energy consumption patterns.

Sandton City, owned by Liberty Group Limited and Pareto Limited, has announced its intention to procure renewable energy through the Independent Energy Pool (IEP) platform.

This innovative, business-to-business energy pool enables electricity consumers, generators, and traders to buy and sell electricity efficiently and cost-effectively, marking a significant milestone in Sandton City’s sustainable electricity procurement journey.
Liberty Two Degrees chief commercial officer Josè Snyders emphasised the importance of environmental leadership and innovation.

“As managers of Sandton City, which has always been an environmental leader and has set the standard in retail innovation, we are purposeful in our endeavours to manage and diminish Sandton City’s carbon footprint.

“We aim to achieve energy efficiencies and other opportunities through further initiatives… We will persist in ensuring that the mall continues to operate responsibly, considering the environment and the needs of all our stakeholders,” Snyders said.

The IEP is set to host an information-sharing session, providing a valuable opportunity for electricity traders to familiarise themselves with the procurement processes on the IEP’s platform.

“Interested traders are encouraged to register for these informative sessions, which will facilitate secure, balanced, and standardised transactions within the IEP ecosystem.

“This platform also allows for the trading of renewable energy certificates and encompasses tracking and reporting of Environmental, Social, and Governance criteria,” Snyders added.

Snyders said the long-term sustainability of Sandton City hinged on environmental protection. “Our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship aims to minimise our impact on the environment and address climate change.”
