Theatre on the Square wishes Sandton a happy festive season

Theatre owner Daphne Kuhn shared feedback on the year that was 2024 at the playhouse on the square.

Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton has served as the stage for several beautiful, inspired, and often emotion-eliciting theatre productions and comedy shows hosted at Theatre on the Square.

The Sandton theatre’s founder and owner Daphne Kuhn reflected on how 2024 had been an incredible year, after having to start over with no sponsorship after Covid-19.

“It had been really hard over the past 30 years that I’ve been producing theatre with Theatre on the Square but we kept busy with comedies, events, weekly uplifting classical and jazz music,” Kuhn said. “I, on the whole, loved the productions, otherwise I wouldn’t contemplate doing them. In and away, 2024 was a wonderful year for us.”

T.O.P Comedy theatremakers Sasha Karlin, Hlumie Moloi, Hira Lodhi, Martin Grendele and James Netherlands brought a thrilling, hilarious murder mystery to the square in 2024.

Kuhn recalled some of her most well-received performances from this year, from Vincent, which combined elements about music, the history of arts, as well as the life of Van Gogh, and themes exploring mental health challenges, to Spanish Steps, a side-splitting comedy about middle-aged relationships.

“Closest to my heart this year was The Suit, as well. It was about being disloyal and dishonest, and the theme of infidelity, and it was woven together so beautifully, starring Sello MaakeKaNcube in the lead. The finest comedians brought the house down, and we had sold-out audiences most of the time – with Loyiso Madinga, Schalk Bezuidenhout and Nic Rabinowitz.”

Kuhn especially thanked the Sandton Chronicle, and the theatre’s supporters for all the care and appreciation shown for the arts throughout the year.

“What an absolute joy it has been to work with the Sandton Chronicle and for all the enormous support that you’ve given us over months on the many productions that we have staged. You have uplifted your readership by presenting beautifully written and positive reviews about arts and culture here in Sandton. Your journalism on the arts has brought people together. Wishing you all success as you grow from strength to strength in 2025.”
