Sandton paddlers shine at first canoe race of the year

From a challenging 8km paddle to junior races, the 2025 season opener at Emmarentia Dam had something for everyone.

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club hosted its first 2025 canoeing event on January 12 at Emmarentia Dam, hosting a variety of races catering to all fitness levels, from the competitive to those looking to get back into shape.

According to Jennie Dallas, PR for the Gauteng Canoe Union, the event attracted participants of all ages and abilities, including many from the Sandton area.

“Whether seasoned athletes or those getting fit again, the event provided something for everyone and many enjoyed a day on the water,” said Dallas.

She added paddlers had several race options, including the challenging Red Race, which consisted of an 8km paddle, a 3km portage (running while carrying the boat), and another 7km paddle.

“The Pink Race, similar to the Red, featured a run without the boat carry. The Yellow Race had no run requirement, while the Green Race was designed for U12 juniors.”
