Dusi journey ends short of finish line

Despite challenging conditions, Mohammed Patel was the picture of resilience and determination at the 74th Dusi Canoe River Marathon.

Hurlingham’s Mohammed Patel had an unforgettable experience at the 74th Dusi Canoe River Marathon, held from February 20 to 22.

The race, a gruelling 120km endurance challenge along the Msunduzi and Mgeni Rivers, draws thousands of paddlers each year. Despite the medium to low water levels this year, which created tricky conditions, Patel tackled the course with determination. After three days of intense paddling and portaging, Patel was nearing the finish when disaster struck.

Mohammed Patel carries a boat on the portage.

While navigating the notoriously tricky rapids, his boat became entangled around a rock. Unable to free himself in time, he spent valuable moments making repairs, causing him to miss the finish line.

This experience, while frustrating, is something that happens frequently at river races.
