Ubuntu in action at Eastridge Christian School

Learners at Eastridge Christian School learn the importance of cleanliness and community involvement in a hands-on initiative that has a lasting impact on Bramley.

Eastridge Christian School in Bramley has an inspiring initiative aimed at teaching learners the values of responsibility, cleanliness, and community care.

The Clean the Street campaign, which takes place every year, is part of the school’s ongoing efforts to foster a sense of Ubuntu, an African philosophy that emphasises interconnectedness and mutual care among people.

Grace Sibanda, the school chaplain, shared the significance of the campaign. “This initiative helps our learners realise the importance of taking care of their environment, and understanding the impact of their actions on the wider community. By picking up litter, they learn not just to care for their surroundings but also to show kindness to those around them.”

The event saw learners actively engaged in cleaning local streets, armed with protective clothing they brought from home.

Many learners, including a particularly enthusiastic Grade 2 learner, were eager to participate. “One young learner was so excited to pick up litter that he was the last to enter the school gate. He explained that his parents always encourage him to keep his surroundings clean. It was heartwarming to see such enthusiasm for something so important.”

As part of the event, learners also contributed creatively by making posters to raise awareness about cleanliness. Some even volunteered to carry trash bags along the streets, truly embodying the spirit of community involvement.

“It was remarkable to see the learners take ownership of the campaign and contribute in such meaningful ways,” said Sibanda.

In a world where some worry that children are losing essential values, Eastridge Christian School aims to prove otherwise.

“This event shows that we are raising a generation of responsible and kind global citizens, who care for one another and their environment.”
