JW responds to video woman’s complaint
A video, posted by Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, of a woman discussing a leak at the intersection of Elizabeth and 2nd streets, has prompted JW into action.
A video posted on the social media platform X by Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams shows a woman discussing the hazardous state of a leak at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and 2nd Street.
According to the woman in the video, there is a dug-up hole where a pipe has been leaking.
In response to the video, as well as complaints made to them, Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed that they are aware of the excavation at the corner of Elizabeth Avenue and 2nd Street.

Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for JW, provided clarity on the ongoing repairs. “The excavation is necessary to assess the damage to the pipe. This is standard procedure when dealing with water pipe issues. After the pipe was exposed, our team was able to evaluate the extent of the damage and determine what repairs were needed.”
She further explained that while repairs had initially been attempted, they were unsuccessful. “Unfortunately, the first round of repairs did not hold, and we had to find an alternative plan. We have continued to monitor the site and ensure that it remains barricaded to warn residents of the open excavation.”

Shabalala noted that the delay in completing the repairs is partly due to the time it took to source the necessary materials. “If the required materials are not in storage, they must be ordered, and that process can take some time.”
She explained that JW is now taking further action to resolve the issue.
Shabalala confirmed that a boilermaker has been arranged to assist with welding, as previous attempts had failed. To facilitate the repairs, the water supply will be temporarily isolated, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of the week, March 28 to 30.
