Local Knitwits contribute to world’s hugest happiness blanket
The hugest happiness blanket was unveiled on March 20, and while the Knitwits for the Needy group could not attend, their contributions warmed hearts across the nation.
Nelson Mandela University’s Second Avenue Campus, in Gqeberha, became the epicentre of warmth and unity as the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement unveiled the world’s hugest happiness blanket.
The event, held on the United Nations International Day of Happiness on March 20, was a spectacular showcase of kindness and compassion, bringing together hundreds of people to celebrate this historic moment.

A sea of colourful, handcrafted blankets, stitched together by dedicated South African knitters, created an unforgettable display.
At the heart of it all was a massive yellow smiley emoji, symbolising joy and embodying the spirit of giving that has defined the movement since its inception in 2013.
Every blanket, carefully crafted with love and care, was destined to provide warmth to those in need.

While the Knitwits 4 the Needy knitting and crocheting group, from Hurlingham, could not attend the event in person, they were deeply grateful to contribute to this monumental initiative.
Greta Collier, the ambassador for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, expressed her gratitude, saying: “We want to honour Carolyn Steyn, the founder of 67 Blankets, and thank her for allowing us to be part of such a significant project. It is an incredible opportunity to show our kindness and love for the needy. Though we couldn’t be there physically, our hearts were with everyone involved.”
