Morningside Country Club brings bowls to Gauteng schools
A new programme aims to introduce lawn bowls to previously excluded learners across Gauteng, providing fresh opportunities to stay active and build confidence.
In a vibrant push to promote lawn bowls among learners, Morningside Country Club, in partnership with the Johannesburg Bowling Association, launched an initiative to introduce the sport to schools across Gauteng.
The programme specifically targets learners who have traditionally not participated in sports, offering them a fun and engaging way to stay active, improve concentration, build confidence, and learn valuable teamwork skills.

Khali D Jamnda, the organiser of the initiative, said, “This is more than just a game. We have found that bowls is a fantastic way for learners to get outdoors and get involved, especially those who may not usually be included in traditional sports activities. It is inclusive, challenging, and fun.”

She added that the programme was being rolled out to GDE, Model C, and private schools, with a focus on long-term growth of the sport.
“The recent tournament served as a test event and welcomed learners from Alexandra-based schools, Pholoso Primary and Minerva High School. Previously, these learners had only experienced bowls on indoor mats.”

Jamnda pointed out that the event gave them their first chance to play on a professional outdoor green, helping them to familiarise themselves with the facilities and the rules of outdoor play.

While the tournament’s format mirrored traditional events, its focus was developmental and introductory. Community support plays a key role in the programme’s success, and organisers are calling on parents and local businesses to get involved through sponsorships and volunteer support.

“Our previous tournament was proudly sponsored by RMB and Coca-Cola. With continued support, we can grow this initiative and ensure more learners benefit from the many life skills bowls can offer.”
