The Sandton Convention Centre was buzzing with anticipation on the evening of May 2 as hundreds of comedy enthusiasts gathered for the grand opening of the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival.
The three-day comedic extravaganza, which ran until May 4, kicked off with a bang, featuring a stellar lineup of national and local comedy heavyweights and culminating in a no-holds-barred roast of Democratic Alliance federal chairperson Helen Zille.
The festival’s inaugural night promised a night of diverse comedic styles, and it delivered. The stage was graced by the likes of the ever-popular Griffi, known for his sharp wit and relatable observations.

He was joined by the dynamic and physical comedy of Rob van Vuuren, who never fails to get the audience roaring with laughter.
The hilarious and insightful Coleste Ntuli brought her unique perspective to the stage, while the veteran comedian Isaac Gampu reminded everyone why he remains a beloved figure in the South African comedy scene.
However, the undisputed highlight and talking point of the opening night was the highly anticipated roast of Zille. Known for her outspoken nature and often controversial political stances, Zille proved to be a willing and good-humoured target for the evening’s roasters.

The atmosphere in the hall was electric, with the audience enjoying the opportunity to see a prominent political figure take it on the chin for the sake of laughter.
The roast, a format known for its biting humour and playful insults, brought the first night of the festival to a memorable and raucous close.
