Talk inspires college students for future careers in criminal justice and psychology
Students at The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton were inspired by Dr Gérard Labuschagne’s insights into criminal behaviour, law, and psychology, emphasising that passion and adaptability are keys to a successful career.
The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton students had the opportunity to engage with Dr Gérard Labuschagne, one of South Africa’s most renowned criminologists, during a recent talk hosted by the campus’s career services, in partnership with the IIE Faculty of Law’s Juridical Society.
Labuschagne, a registered clinical psychologist, advocate of the High Court (non-practicing), and former brigadier in the South African Police Service, shared his extensive experience spanning policing, academia, psychology, and criminal law.
The event provided students from the IIE Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Humanities with a rare glimpse into the multifaceted world of criminal justice and the diverse career pathways available in these fields.

Drawing from his time as the section head of the investigative psychology section within SAPS, as well as his work as a clinical psychologist, Labuschagne offered real-life case studies, which highlighted the intensity, complexity, and profound impact of working in criminal law and criminology.
“Your chosen qualification is only the beginning of your career. Your career path can shift, and that’s okay. The right career path and passion will always find you.”
The engaging presentation left students feeling inspired and motivated to pursue their passions, with many recognising the importance of adaptability and resilience in building a meaningful career.
Saiyuri Singh, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student at The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton, shared her thoughts: “Dr Labuschagne’s talk was incredibly insightful. I loved hearing what forensic psychology looks like in South Africa. It really opened my eyes to the many different paths a career can take. His message: That you never know where your journey will lead, and that the key is to always follow your passion, truly resonated with me.”
