Redhill’s Sarah Friend rides high after Sanesa success

Redhill’s Sarah Friend proves dedication pays off with a first-place finish at the Sanesa 4th Qualifier. Find out how her special bond with Rio helps her stay on top.

When Redhill School’s Sarah Friend rode into the Sanesa 4th Qualifier recently, she was not chasing a rosette; she was chasing progress.

But walking away with a first place in the 1.10m competition round and a third place in the 1.10m 2-phase was more than just a podium moment for the Grade 11 learner.

For Sarah, it was proof that the early mornings, the setbacks, and the hours in the saddle were paying off.

“There’s no feeling quite like it. Although competing for me isn’t about taking home a rosette, securing a win like this shows you that all the hard work, setbacks and long hours have been worth it. It’s a physical symbol of your progression and skill.”

It wasn’t all smooth riding, though. Sarah admits the 2-phase round pushed her the most.

“The 2-phase, in the competition round, you have two separate rounds, one fast, one slow, so you can get into the right headspace. But in the 2-phase, halfway through, you need to quickly change gears, which can be a challenge for me.”

Sarah said her success was her partnership with Rio, her horse of nearly five years.

“Rio is my best friend. He’s immensely talented but also has the kindest heart. He’s always helping me throughout our competitions when I make an error, and he takes care of me. When we are not riding, I can spend hours with him, just playing and chatting.”

Sarah’s training routine is disciplined but balanced. She rides Rio five times a week, mixing technical flat work and jumping lessons with the occasional ride out in the field just to let him have fun.

“With horses, it’s all about routine. For Rio, it’s not about the actual jump but developing his muscle strength and technique.”

While she admits to feeling tense in the warm-up arena, she said deep breathing and Rio’s presence helped her settle.

“My mom and an equestrian herself and my biggest supporter. She works unbelievably hard behind the scenes to ensure my success.”

Sarah pointed out that this competition reinforced the power of teamwork, with her horse, her coach, and her family.

“For me, it’s all about discipline and the desire to keep improving. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing yourself progress.”
