Outcry over Bryanston Sports Club sale

Councillors, along with the community, have been blindsided as the Bryanston Sports Club land appears to be for sale, without any public warning.

A storm is brewing over the future of the Bryanston Sports Club, after revelations that the property was quietly listed in the Provincial Gazette for sale, without any public participation or notification to affected councillors.

The site, which includes both the club and a municipal library, was originally donated by Anglo American in the 1940s, with the clear intention that it remain for sport and recreation.

Yet, in June 2025, the City of Johannesburg declared its intent to dispose of the land, a move that councillors say violates both process and principle.

Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman says the notice was never shared with her, or with the community. “We were told the property might be leased or transferred, but now we see it’s listed for sale. No one saw the notices on-site, not even the library staff.”

Harman revealed that Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) promised, in a council meeting last November, that the proposal would not go ahead. “This was done without public consultation, using outdated valuations, and with no clarity on title deeds or legal compliance.”

Harman, and the community, deserve answers, and a proper chance to have their say.

We have sent an inquiry to the City of Johannesburg, and we will provide an update once their reply is received.
