Highlights of Women’s financial struggles and progress

South African women shoulder financial stress but show rising optimism, Old Mutual report finds.

Old Mutual hosted a media briefing on August 20 to unveil the findings, in partnership with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), of its 2025 Savings and Investment Monitor (OMSIM), shedding light on the financial attitudes and behaviours of South African women.

Vuyokazi Mabude, Old Mutual’s Head of Knowledge and Insights, presented the research and highlighted that women are showing resilience in the face of economic pressure.

“We are starting to see a new pulse; women are more optimistic about their finances, more confident in their ability to earn, and increasingly open to financial advice. But at the same time, financial stress for women has climbed from 39% to 43% in the past year.”

She pointed out that the study revealed that while 76% of women expect their finances to improve over the next six months, many still struggle with managing expenses, maintaining budgeting discipline, and balancing obligations with long-term financial security.

“One in three women surveyed is a single mother, and two-thirds earn below R30 000 a month, realities that compound financial strain.”

Mabude explained that the research also shows women are exploring multiple income streams and making strides in debt management, though some turn to risky alternatives such as gambling.

“Encouragingly, investment confidence is rising, with more women seeking professional financial advice.”

The briefing also highlighted Old Mutual’s collaboration with the JSE on the upcoming SheInvests consumer event, a platform aimed at equipping women with tools, solutions, and knowledge to boost financial literacy and empowerment.
