Katherine Street reinstatement complete
After overcoming multiple setbacks due to underground leaks, the Johannesburg Roads Agency has finally reinstated Katherine Street, restoring safe access for residents.
Bringing an end to weeks of disruption for residents, commuters, and motorists in the area, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has completed the reinstatement of Katherine Street as of September 4.
The project was scheduled to commence on August 11 and expected to be completed on August 22, after Johannesburg Water (JW) completed the backfilling of the excavation on July 22.

The excavation on Katherine Street began weeks earlier, after JW discovered a pipe burst that also damaged underground fibre optic cables belonging to Dark Fibre Africa.

This led to an extended period where the site remained exposed, raising safety concerns and causing significant inconvenience.
When JRA visited the site on August 11, they found the pipe leaking, leading to further delays as they had to wait for JW to do further repairs.
JRA regional operations manager Khayalethu Gqibitole said: “Following the successful leak repairs by JW, and confirmation that the ground conditions were suitable, our team was able to carry out the reinstatement work efficiently. We are pleased to have restored the road surface, ensuring safety and improved access for the community.”
