Replacement borehole pump eases Sandton SPCA water crises
Sandton SPCA general manager Stephen Maila says he cannot thank the community enough for keeping the shelter’s doors open during the water crisis.
The Sandton SPCA is breathing a sigh of relief after enduring several anxious days without a reliable water source.
The shelter’s borehole pump, which failed on November 3, left staff scrambling to find enough water to care for more than 200 animals in their facility.
What began as a technical breakdown quickly became a community-wide effort to keep the SPCA afloat.

Volunteers, residents, and local businesses rallied together to donate thousands of litres of water, ensuring that the animals remained hydrated and safe while the shelter worked to find a permanent solution.
That solution came sooner than expected. On November 6, Rand Water Boring, a Johannesburg-based borehole company, stepped in to help… Completely free of charge.
Rand Water Boring owner Robbin Carr said: “We found that the borehole pump was burnt out, so we replaced it. We’ve also committed to provide ongoing services at no cost for their pump systems. We wanted to do our part to make sure the SPCA can continue caring for the animals without worrying about water again.”

The new pump installation marks a major milestone for the shelter, which depends heavily on its borehole to provide between 3 000 and 5 000 litres of water daily for cleaning, feeding, and maintaining hygiene.
Sandton SPCA general manager Stephen Maila expressed deep gratitude to both the company and the community. “Thanks to the incredible generosity and swift response from our amazing community, our animals have water again. Your kindness carried us through this crisis, from dropped-off water bottles to truck deliveries, every gesture of support made a difference. We are especially thankful to Rand Water Boring for stepping in when we needed help the most.”
Maila added that the SPCA also received a 2 050l JoJo tank donation from Car Service City in Parkmore and the Parkmore community, which will further strengthen their backup water storage.
While the immediate crisis has been resolved, the SPCA continues to face financial challenges. The organisation is appealing for ongoing support to cover the remaining installation and maintenance costs. “It costs a lot to keep our operations running and our animals cared for. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us continue the work we do every day.”
Residents and businesses wishing to contribute to the remaining costs or ongoing needs of the SPCA are encouraged to contribute directly to the shelter’s bank account.
