Pretoria Avenue and Katherine Street intersection misses deadline

Although the February 6 completion date has passed, visible progress on site suggests the long-running roadworks are now in their final stages.

The intersection at Pretoria Avenue and Katherine Street has not reopened by its planned completion date of February 6, but the latest on-site developments indicate that the project is nearing the finish line.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) had previously stated that the intersection was expected to reach practical completion by February 6, weather permitting. However, that deadline has come and gone, and work is still underway.

As of February 12, fresh tar has been laid along the roadway, and construction teams were seen actively working on-site. The intersection appears significantly improved, with surfacing largely complete and only final touches remaining.

Yellow barriers are still in place, and some finishing work continues along the edges of the road and pavement areas. Workers were observed compacting sections of the surface, suggesting that final preparations are being made before reopening.

JRA previously indicated that outstanding work included road surfacing, installation of a manhole cover, kerb inlet slabs, road markings, and site clearance.

Weather was cited as the biggest risk to meeting the deadline, as certain tasks cannot be completed in wet conditions.

While the missed deadline may frustrate motorists and nearby businesses who have endured months of disruption, the visible progress, on February 12, shows that relief may not be far off.

JRA was asked for comment. We will publish their reply as soon as we receive it.
