52-year-old starts his martial arts journey

Looking for something new at 52, Paul Bothma joined a Rivonia dojo, which has helped him build resilience and focus.

Seeking a new challenge, Paul Bothma (52) joined the RKC Dojo to test himself both physically and mentally.

Bothma recalls feeling nervous during his first training session. “I was not sure if I really belonged there, but I was also excited and wanted to see it through.”

Over time, regular training began to boost his confidence. “I trust myself more now, not just in training but in everyday situations. If I can push through a tough session, I know I can face challenges outside the dojo as well.”

He explained that consistency has been one of the biggest lessons. “Sometimes the hardest part is just turning up, but once you are there, the training and support from the sensei and fellow students help you keep going.”

Beyond physical skills, Bothma elaborated that the dojo has taught him patience, humility, and resilience. “Progress takes time. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards before moving forward, and that is part of growth.”

Among his proudest achievements so far is earning his 7th kyu grading and beginning training in jodo. “It is intense and technical, but it’s rewarding.”

Bothma describes the dojo’s environment as supportive and welcoming. “It feels like a team and a family.”

His advice to anyone considering joining martial arts? “You don’t have to be confident or skilled to start. Just show up. The rest will come with time.”
