Woman reaches the highest ranks in kendo and jodo

An international kendo master visitor in RKC Dojo in Rivonia reflects on her decades-long journey and the growing presence of women in martial arts.

The path to mastery in martial arts is long and demanding, but for Katja Fleury, it has also meant navigating a space where women were once rarely seen.

Visiting South Africa for the SAKF International Seminar and SEFOR Cup 2026 in Rivonia, Fleury represents a small group of women globally who have reached the rank of 7th Dan in kendo, alongside an equally high ranking in Jodo.

Her journey began in 1988, at a time when female participation in kendo was limited.

“There were very few women in most dojos, and even fewer role models at higher levels.”

Despite this, she remained committed, balancing training with everyday responsibilities while steadily progressing through the ranks. Over time, the challenges she faced became part of her growth.

“Training regularly, learning from mistakes, and facing challenges were all part of the process.”

Now she is a senior instructor and believes that the meaning of rank evolves with time.

“Rank should never be the primary goal but rather the natural result of sincere training.”

Her presence in South Africa during Women’s Month highlights the changing face of martial arts. Today, more women are entering the discipline, competing and teaching, contributing to a more inclusive environment.

Fleury also sees strong potential in the local kendo community.

“There is a strong sense of camaraderie, which creates a welcoming atmosphere and great potential for future growth.

For aspiring practitioners, especially women, her advice is grounded and practical.

“Enter with curiosity and an open mind. Confidence will grow naturally through practice.”
