Redhill learners let their Hair down on the stage

The curtain rose on March 21 as Redhill School launched its first major production in a newly renovated theatre, showcasing learners’ talent, and a timeless story about youth and identity.

A vibrant celebration of youth, creativity, and self-expression took centre stage on the evening of March 21, as learners from Redhill School premiered their bold new production of the iconic rock musical Hair.

The opening performance marked a significant milestone for the school, becoming the first major production to be staged in its newly renovated theatre space.
The musical, which runs until March 31, features around 40 learners, aged 14 to 18, working both on stage and behind the scenes. The audience enjoyed energetic choreography, live music, and powerful storytelling, which captured the spirit of the original production while speaking to a new generation.

Executive head at Redhill, and director of the show, Joseph Gerassi said: “Originally debuting in 1967, Hair became known worldwide for its groundbreaking rock music and themes of freedom, identity, and social change. The learners brought a fresh, contemporary interpretation, while staying true to the musical’s message about belonging and self-discovery.”

He added that the production process has been a valuable learning experience for learners, encouraging discipline, teamwork, and creative risk-taking.

The choreography is led by Dr Bailey Snyman, whose physical theatre approach adds a modern edge to the performance, while musical director Rudi Olivier guides a live band performing the show’s iconic soundtrack.

Redhill School has built a strong reputation for producing high-quality learner theatre, with previous productions receiving recognition at the nationally respected Naledi Theatre Awards.
