Johannesburg Roads Agency meets April 3 deadline, backfilling Illovo sinkhole

Johannesburg Roads Agency has completed backfilling work by the promised deadline, improving driving conditions on Chaplin Street.

The sinkhole on Chaplin Street in Illovo has been repaired following weeks of safety concerns from residents and motorists.

Backfilling work was completed by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) by the April 3 deadline, significantly improving driving conditions along the affected section of road. Motorists can now pass through the area more safely, although the final tar resurfacing has not yet been completed.

The sinkhole had previously been exposing underground infrastructure and raising concerns about potential vehicle damage and road safety. Residents had called for urgent intervention as the hole deepened and occupied a significant portion of the roadway.

On April 1, JRA confirmed that repair work was underway at the site. Head of department for regional operations Khaya Gqibitole said: “JRA teams are currently undertaking road repairs on Chaplin Street in Illovo. Roadworks are scheduled to be completed by Friday, April 3, weather permitting.”

The agency ultimately met the stated deadline, with the damaged section stabilised through backfilling. While the immediate danger has been addressed, permanent resurfacing work is still expected to take place.

Motorists are advised to continue exercising caution until the final road surface is fully restored.
