Stars unite to honour jazz legend at Tribute to Hugh Masekela

Award-winning Sandton artist Tresor says performing in celebration of Hugh Masekela is one of the greatest honours of his life.

Music lovers can expect an emotional and powerful evening as leading artists gather to celebrate the life and legacy of jazz icon Hugh Masekela at the Tribute to Hugh Masekela, taking place at the Joburg Theatre.

The show will take place on April 9 at 19:30.

Among the performers is award-winning singer Tresor, who described his participation in the tribute as deeply personal and rooted in respect for the legendary musician’s influence on African music.

“For me, the inspiration is rooted in lineage. Even though my sound explores modern African pop spaces, the foundation of everything I do is built on the soil Papa Hugh tilled. He was the ultimate pioneer of the African sound on a global stage.”

Tresor, who lives in Sandton, believes events like this play an important role in reconnecting communities with their cultural identity. He said that while Sandton is known for its fast-paced lifestyle, gatherings centred around music and heritage create a shared sense of belonging.

“Events like this bring the soul back to the city. When we gather at the theatre to celebrate Papa Hugh, it reminds us of our shared identity and history.”

The artist added that rehearsals for the tribute have been particularly emotional, especially when hearing the distinctive brass sounds that defined Masekela’s music.

“There’s a moment when the brass section hits a certain chord, and you can almost feel his presence in the room. Realising that I am now part of the group keeping his melodies alive was very powerful for me.”

Tresor believes the best way for modern artists to keep Masekela’s legacy alive is by remaining authentic and proud of their African roots.

“We keep him relevant by staying bold and true to ourselves. We honour him by carrying his spirit wherever we go.”
