City entities remain silent as sinkhole on 5th Street in Wynberg goes unrepaired

Months later, businesses in Wynberg say no repairs have been made to the sinkhole on 5th Street, and no answers have been given.

Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart, along with business representatives, revisited the sinkhole on 5th Street to assess progress on April 15.

They found that the situation remains unchanged, with no visible repair work underway.

The sinkhole, which formed following a pipe burst in October last year, continues to block access to businesses and pose safety risks to customers and delivery vehicles.

“The situation is exactly the same,” operations manager at Eurolux Johannesburg Neels Smit said. “We haven’t seen anyone from any entity come to the site, and there has been no progress.”

Businesses say repeated follow-ups with city departments have yielded little response.

Stewart added that he has escalated the matter to multiple officials within the city, including representatives from Johannesburg Roads Agency and Johannesburg Water, but has yet to receive a formal update.

“The most recent communication was simply a referral to another official. We are still waiting for a clear response or a plan of action.”

He added that the prolonged delay is placing businesses under ongoing strain, and raising concerns about accountability in infrastructure maintenance.

“This is now many months down the line since the initial incident in October, and the problem remains unresolved. Businesses are continuing to suffer while they wait for intervention.”

Despite repeated requests for information, officials from Johannesburg Roads Agency and Johannesburg Water have not yet provided a timeline for repairs.
