No shooting at Winifred Mandela Precinct as police arrest suspect and recover hijacked vehicle
Police have confirmed there was no shooting at Winifred Mandela Precinct after an earlier alert, with officers instead arresting a suspect and recovering a reported hijacked vehicle.
Police and centre management have clarified that no shooting or armed robbery took place at Winifred Mandela Precinct in Bryanston following an earlier alert that led to heightened concern and increased law enforcement activity in the area.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers arrested a suspect and recovered a reported hijacked vehicle at the shopping centre on June 22.
Nevhuhulwi said Highway Patrol members identified a vehicle linked to a case reported in Norwood and initiated a pursuit. The vehicle stopped near the shopping centre, where about five occupants allegedly exited and fled on foot in different directions.

“The police managed to arrest one of the suspects and seized the hijacked vehicle and signal jammers found inside the vehicle. The team is on the lookout for outstanding suspects. Police investigations continue.”

In a statement issued at 13:00, centre management said messages circulating on various platforms alleging a shooting incident or armed robbery at the shopping centre were incorrect.
According to the management, the incident occurred outside the shopping centre precinct, and the suspect or suspects entered the area while allegedly attempting to evade arrest during the SAPS pursuit. Centre management said the shopping centre was never the target or location of an armed robbery and confirmed that the centre remained operational.’

The management added that it continues to work closely with SAPS and urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information and instead rely on official communication channels for updates.
