Worsening potholes frustrate motorists on Kew’s 1st Avenue
Residents and motorists say temporary fixes are no longer enough as potholes continue to plague a section of 1st Avenue in Kew.
The worsening condition of 1st Avenue in Kew has sparked renewed calls for intervention, with motorists and residents expressing concern over the growing number of potholes along the road.
The damaged stretch has become increasingly difficult to navigate, with drivers reporting that they are forced to manoeuvre around potholes to avoid damaging their vehicles.
In an effort to improve conditions, residents have filled some of the potholes with rocks and sand, but despite these efforts, the road remains in poor condition, and the potholes continue to reappear.

Ward 81 councillor Joanne Hoorwitz acknowledged the issue, saying there are numerous potholes in and around Kew.
The publication sought comment from Johannesburg Roads Agency regarding the state of the road and possible repair timelines. The agency said it would respond to the enquiry, but no further comment had been received at the time of publication.

Residents are now calling for permanent repairs, arguing that temporary measures do not address the underlying infrastructure problem and that road conditions continue to deteriorate.
