Bowlers battle for Gauteng Open men’s singles knockout spots on Morningside Country Club greens

Gauteng bowlers went head-to-head at Morningside Country Club, battling for a place in the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open knockout rounds.

0The greens at Morningside Country Club came alive with fierce competition on July 12 as bowlers from across Gauteng competed in the men’s singles section of the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open, one of the province’s premier lawn bowls tournaments.

With players representing districts from across Gauteng, as well as competitors from neighbouring clubs, every match carried high stakes as bowlers fought for a coveted place in the knockout stages.

Morningside Country Club’s Rob Zimmermann said it was an honour for the club to host part of the prestigious tournament.

“We’re privileged to be running the men’s singles of the Gauteng Open this weekend,” he said. “It’s a very competitive competition that represents all the districts within Gauteng, and because it’s an open tournament, neighbouring clubs can also participate.”

Zimmermann added that the men’s singles competition begins with 160 pools of three players each.

Pool winners advance to the knockout rounds, where the competition intensifies through the last 32, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the championship match.

The tournament has been running throughout July, beginning with the junior and disabled divisions before moving on to men’s and women’s pairs, men’s singles, and men’s and women’s fours.

The tournament will conclude later this month with the finals at Delville Bowls Club.

“The popularity of the tournament has really grown. The organisers couldn’t host every event at one venue, so they reached out to us, as they’ve done before, to help accommodate all the players,” Zimmermann said.

He said the event continues to attract an impressive standard of competition, featuring both current and former top provincial bowlers.

“It’s a great tournament with lots of strength, lots of top players, plenty of former top players, and a lot of fun. With the beautiful Gauteng winter weather, it’s a fantastic place to be.”

One of the players, Philip Vermeulen from CBC Old Boys Bowling Club, said, “The competition was tight, but I really enjoyed myself playing against tough opponents. It was a beautiful day.”
