DP World Wanderers Stadium hosts vibrant Field Band Foundation national finals in Johannesburg
Young performers from across the country take to the field with music, energetic routines, and colorful costumes as the 29th national championships near their climax.
The sound of drums, cheers and music continued to fill the air at DP World Wanderers Stadium as the Field Band Foundation’s 29th National Championships reached their final stages.
Since yesterday morning, the stadium field was transformed into a vibrant stage for young performers from across the country. One after another, the bands stepped onto the grass, delivering tightly rehearsed routines as they chased the chance to finish among the day’s top performers.

Among those competing were Birchleigh Field Band, Setlabotha Field Band, Alexandra Field Band, Danielskuil Field Band, Plett Pioneers Field Band, Cape Whalers Field Band, Blouberg Field Band, Mandini Academy Field Band, Soweto Field Band and Londolusha Springs Field Band.
For spectators, the championships are as much about the spectacle as the competition. Colourful costumes, energetic choreography, pom-poms and powerful drumbeats create a lively atmosphere, with supporters loudly encouraging the performers from the sidelines.

Beyond the fun and excitement, however, is a serious competition. Each band has just eight minutes to make an impression, drawing on routines that performers have rehearsed repeatedly throughout the year.
As the final performances approached, the pressure mounted and the differences between the competing bands came down to the smallest details.

Field Band Foundation CEO Ushama Jerrier said the anticipation among the young participants is part of what makes the championships so special. “The kids are excited to put on a show for eight minutes that they’ve been rehearsing over and over again for the entire year. It is an absolutely fabulous moment.”
For Jerrier, however, the event represents something bigger than trophies and rankings. “Music and movement is the activity, belonging and togetherness is the destination.”
That sense of togetherness was visible across the Wanderers field, where the performers competed against one another while sharing the same passion for music and performance.
As the bands gave everything they had to their routines, and the crowd continued to cheer, the contest for the top positions remained open.
The spectators may have their favourites, but it was be the judges who decided which performances have done enough to secure the overall honours.
