Curro Bryanston Preschool puts curiosity at the heart of early learning

Curro Bryanston Preschool marks a major milestone by becoming the first in Africa to earn official recognition for its play-based early learning model.

At Curro Bryanston Preschool, learning is not limited to worksheets, plastic toys or structured lessons. Instead, young children are encouraged to explore, experiment and make sense of the world around them.

That approach has earned the Bryanston preschool a significant milestone: it became the first Curro school in Africa to receive accreditation for the Curiosity Approach.

The accreditation was celebrated alongside the preschool’s 10th birthday on September 11, bringing together learners, staff and school leadership for a day of entertainment and reflection on the school’s journey since opening in 2015.

The school’s executive head Angie Bezuidenhout said the accreditation reflected the way the preschool approached early childhood development. “You won’t find plastic single-use items in our school,” she said. “It’s real, authentic play, and that’s what we work on.”

She added that the Curiosity Approach encourages educators to use children’s natural curiosity and create opportunities for them to learn through play, exploration and meaningful, real-life experiences.

For a preschool catering for children from three months to six years old, Bezuidenhout said creating an environment where children and families feel connected remained central to the school’s identity.

The school’s journey began in 2015, when three houses, two swimming pools and a tennis court on the property were demolished to make way for a purpose-built early childhood facility. Ten years later, the school has grown into a community focused on giving young children space to discover and learn at their own pace.

“That is exactly what we are celebrating today. We have survived Covid-19. We have created a space where real human connection counts, and that’s what makes our school different from any other.”

Children enjoyed games, jumping castles, hot dogs and popcorn, while magician Trevor ‘Trickey Trevor’ Duffy brought an element of wonder to the occasion with a magic performance.
