Traffic light blues

It is extremely difficult again to drive in parts of Sandton, especially at night, without being harassed by a multitude of window washers, vendors and beggars at intersections.

Anonymous writes:

They seem to descend in their multitudes before the festive season and do so without compunction. There is never a traffic officer in sight, so they go merrily along their way, approaching right up to the vehicles as soon as there is an opportunity when the lights change or the traffic is congested.

Surely there are bylaws which are being flouted?

Is it okay to interfere with traffic? One never sees a traffic officer at night to monitor these intersections. Do traffic officers hibernate at night, or is it a free for all? Come to think of it, one never sees a traffic officer during the day attending to these matters.

It is surely as dangerous to be distracted in the traffic as it is to speed, drive recklessly or not buckle up.

It is like driving though the wild west, cowboys, crooks and wild beasts running around.

The off-ramp on Marlboro drive coming from the NI is particularly dangerous, with window washers particularly targeting women drivers, spraying their goo on windows and obscuring traffic and pedestrians.

There are many vendors on this corner all plying their trade as if it is their ‘right’ to interfere with motorists who have enough difficulty negotiating the traffic on poorly lit busy intersections.

Sometimes the light changes and one is left with an obscured window. It is downright dangerous and unsafe.

Motorists are urged to drive safely but it is well nigh impossible to be courteous and polite in such a lawless environment. It is extremely stressful as well.

Road rage can also cause death and injury .

It would be encouraging to see the traffic department taking their job seriously and doing what they are supposed to do, keeping the roads safe and free from harassment and enforcing the laws until the perpetrators are brought to book.

We need to see action.

We would love to hear your response to this letter. Tweet @looksandton #trafficlightharrasment
