Alric Ward: In celebrating heritage, you realise how important it is to be around and significant to one’s community. It’s important to know that you’re needed here for who you are.
This Heritage Month, with Heritage Day having just passed, Sandton locals were asked why celebrating their heritage is important.
Milena Palma: It’s important because it’s celebrating a part of who you are. Denying your heritage is denying a part of your identity.Musa Hlongwane: Celebrating my heritage is remembering my elders’ elders, my forefathers, my culture, my everything. I celebrate my heritage to teach my kids so that they know where they come from.Nic Theofrastos: So that we remember what happened in our past. It’s important for everyone to know where they come from, to know where we’re going in the future.Arno Venter: Heritage in South Africa is exceptionally important because we come from such a diverse background, from many different ethnic groups. We can learn our heritage from all of those ethnic groups, because they all influence how we think and how we feel.
