Rebels gear up for exciting season
SANDTON – Each team finished off their first season in the top six of their respective leagues.
The newly reinstated Sandton Cricket Club-Rebels is excited to kick start its second season.
According to club chairman Jeremy Meiring, the club had a phenomenal start to the 2019/2020 season, its first season since the club was reignited. “There was a previous club which had died down at George Lea Park, so I sort of took it upon myself to not necessarily revive the old club but rather to build a new club,” he said.
The new club consists of five teams – two Saturday teams, a women’s team and two Sunday teams. One of the Sunday teams which played phenomenally according to Meiring is made up of U18 boys from disadvantaged areas in Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge.
Each team finished off their first season in the top six of their respective leagues. “The first season was really just everyone getting to know each other and getting to know the game, just soak up the atmosphere and enjoy it out there.
“There were no goals like ‘you must win the league’, there was no pressure and the guys responded really well, I am very proud of how they played.”
And it was fair to say that the excitement has not died down as the guys and girls look forward to their season, beginning this month. Not only will the teams don their new kit and use their new equipment, they will without a doubt have a new found confidence as a club.

Meiring admitted that there were a few challenges along the way on account of the pandemic but the Rebels family continued to persevere.
“We were looking to add one more team to the Sunday line-up but due to the hesitancy of a few parents who withdrew their kids this season, we weren’t able to come up with the numbers. But I have already told the players not to worry and to simply go out there and enjoy themselves.”
Meiring concluded that the main objective of the club was for it to be community-driven. He looks forward to seeing more community members getting involved and supporting the club in the future.
