Wanderers hosts development squash fun day

ILLOVO – The event was part of the Wanderers Squash Club Development programme.

Players of Egoli Squash, Vaal and Thusong Squash participated in a squash fun day at Wanderers Club recently.

The event was part of the Wanderers Squash Club Development programme.

Manager and coach at Thusong Squash Development, Chris Hughes said there had been enthusiastic interest from children in Alexandra to learn and play squash, though available resources for managing this have been over-subscribed. The main constraint was transported to and from Alexandra.

“Thusong, Egoli and Vaal do not have premises of their own, and amongst other clubs, Wanderers hosts training of the development players from disadvantaged areas.”

Players who participated in the day ranged from novices to Joburg league level.

Wanderers takes in children between the ages of 10 and 19 providing coaching for Thusong players from Alex and playing facilities for top players who become honorary temporary members at Wanderers.

“The restrictions have severely curtailed a lot of the activities of development squash. To maintain enthusiasm amongst the youngsters and to assess their skill levels, it was crucial that players were given opportunities to participate in competitive games again.”
