Girls’ rugby picking up at BHS

Bryanston High School girls successfully campaigned for a rugby team.

Bryanston High School girls have successfully campaigned for a girls’ touch-rugby team and begun practising touch rugby on Friday.

“The last few years we’ve had a lot of kids coming in and they go to Mr Wright. A lot of the girls are asking to play rugby,” said the fledgling team’s facilitator Maxine Jordaan.

Jordaan added she played touch rugby when she was in high school. Hence she agreed to run the initiative towards there being girls’ rugby teams at the school, realising the girls’ commitment to playing rugby.

“We started four weeks ago,” Jordaan said, celebrating the girls’ progress in the short time.

BHS girls have finally also got a rugby team, and they're getting ready to take on challengers in due course.

“The first practice we had was a bit chaotic; they’re here every Friday, and they are improving so much and loving it – having a really good time.”
She said that there isn’t any pressure for leagues or matches at the moment as the girls are finding their synergy with the sport and one another as teammates.

Vox Pops: How do you feel the Springboks will fare in the Rugby World Cup this year?

Alec Fulton: My prediction for the end of the World Cup: I think it would be South Africa – they’d come first. Second would either be France, or the All Blacks.

Bryanston High School boys fully back the Boks. The U11 players were asked how they thought the Springboks would fair up against the world’s rugby teams at the World Cup, which starts in September. The consensus is that the Springboks will finish in the top two with France.

Connor Byrne: It’s going to be hard-running, passing rugby. I believe we’re going to do fairly well. We will finish either first or second.

Ontathile Mmachacha: I feel like the Boks have got it. We’re winning – we’re definitely winning. Looking at how they played against New Zealand, I think we’ve definitely got it in the pocket.

Enzo Koopman: Firstly, I’m a monumental Bok fan. Yes, [there is] a little pressure, but South Africa will win. France is nothing for us. New Zealand is nothing for us.
