Grace in the Saddle

Layah Gliksman’s passion shines at Sanesa Regionals.

At just nine years old, Redhill Grade 3 learner Layah Gliksman is already setting the bar high in the world of school equestrian sport.

Selected to represent her school in six events at this year’s Sanesa Regionals, Layah is not only one of the youngest riders on the team; she’s also one of the busiest.

Her selection came with a sense of pride and joy.

“I felt super happy and proud.”

She said that she trains every day after school, dedicating time to practise each of her disciplines, an impressive level of commitment for any athlete, let alone one balancing homework and pony care in equal measure.

Among her events, show riding holds a special place in her heart.

“I like getting dressed up.”

She pointed out that behind every strong rider is a team of trusted horses.

Layah speaks of hers with obvious affection.

“They are all friendly, loving, beautiful and my best friends.”

She said despite the pressure of high-level competition, her approach remains refreshingly simple.

“I try to listen to my coaches, but mainly, I just have fun.”

She said that the balance of focus and joy has already paid off, and one of her proudest moments so far was winning the South African Championship Team Showing event, an achievement she holds dear.

This season has taught her the value of patience. “Don’t rush your horse or your tests,” she said.
