Safety first as Capri Cycling Club encourages more women and young people to ride

With support from Peace Force Security, a strong community spirit and riders aged 16 to 85, Capri Cycling Club is proving cycling can be both safe and enjoyable.

For more than four decades, Capri Cycling Club has built its reputation on one simple promise, making cycling safer while creating a welcoming community for riders of all ages and abilities.

Based in Melrose and sponsored by Peace Force Security, the club currently has 181 members ranging in age from 16 to 85. It is now inviting more young people and women to become part of its growing cycling family.

According to chairperson Selwyn Sanders, the club’s longevity comes down to consistency, strong leadership and looking after its members.

“We have always had a committee that’s supported everyone in the club, and that’s one of the reasons we’ve remained successful for so many years.”

Sanders said safety remains the club’s biggest point of difference.

Long before support vehicles became common among cycling clubs, Capri introduced dedicated follow vehicles for every riding group. Today, Peace Force Security provides the vehicles and drivers, ensuring cyclists have assistance throughout every Saturday and Sunday ride.

Sanders said the support vehicles have helped many people feel confident enough to start cycling.

“It is dangerous riding on the roads today. Knowing there’s a vehicle behind you gives people peace of mind.”

The club caters for everyone, from social riders enjoying a relaxed pace to experienced cyclists looking for longer distances.

It also hopes to grow women’s participation by creating an even more welcoming environment and offering incentives for new members.

Beyond cycling, Capri is committed to giving back.

Every year, the club chooses a charity to support through fundraising rides and community initiatives, while members regularly participate in social rides that strengthen friendships on and off the bike.

Sanders believes attracting younger cyclists is essential to ensuring the club continues to thrive.

“The future of any club depends on younger members joining. We want to keep cycling enjoyable, social and safe for everyone.”

Anyone interested in joining can attend a trial ride before deciding to become a member. Membership includes official club cycling kit, with additional benefits available through the club.
