Bryanston parkrun was awash with purple on August 1 as Scout groups from across the area joined the weekly event to celebrate International Scarf Day and welcome the start of Women’s Month.

Around 50 members of the 1st Rivertrail Scout Group, including Scouts, leaders, and their families, took part in the 5km parkrun, with many experiencing the event for the first time. They were joined by about 30 Scouts from the 1st Bryanston Scout Group, who included the parkrun as part of a longer urban hike from their Scout Hall.

Other Scouts from neighbouring groups also joined the celebration.

The initiative formed part of Scouts South Africa’s national Paint the Parkrun Purple campaign, encouraging Scout groups across the country to wear their purple scarves and participate in their local parkruns to promote healthy living, friendship and community involvement.

Event director Justin Brass said the day was about more than completing the course.

“It was wonderful welcoming everyone dressed in purple. We were excited to have the Scouts join us with their scarves, and it was also a lovely way to welcome Women’s Month. It created a fantastic atmosphere, and we’re hoping the celebrations continue throughout the month,” said Brass.
