Bryanston Honey Badgers eye bigger and better 2026 season

The Bryanston Honey Badgers Rugby Club has officially kicked off preparations for the 2026 rugby season, with training sessions already underway and the club aiming for another year of remarkable growth and development.

Founded in 2017, the Bryanston Honey Badgers Rugby Club continues to establish itself as one of the fastest-growing junior rugby clubs in the area.

Practices and training sessions are currently taking place at Bryanston High School every Tuesday and Thursday, as players prepare for the official start of matches at the end of June.

Club chairperson Anthony Losco said the club is entering the new season with excitement and ambition after experiencing significant growth over the past few years.

“We are so excited to tell you about this amazing development that we have going on here and we are so excited for the 2026 season.”

He reflected on the journey the Honey Badgers have taken since their establishment. “The club has had its ups and downs, being a small club. As of 2023, we were still very much a micro team. Last year, we grew our numbers. We are currently sitting on 200, and the intention is to grow up to about 400.”

He added that the club was formed for the development of rugby, trying to give youngsters from that area as much chance as possible to make it to the provincial level.

“We service as many schools in the area as possible. We’re always open to the schools sending their kids down to us, where we offer a nice, friendly, and professional environment.”

Loscos said the Honey Badgers celebrated a milestone during the previous season, when several players attended inter-provincial tournament (IPT) trials. “Last year, a lot of our boys got to go to the IPT trials, which is the club season’s interprovincial competition. We had success there for our first year of getting the boys to go through.

“What was really pleasing, was the fact that a lot of our boys in the younger groups went on in the school season and were very, very successful.”

Head team manager Aimee Willis-Dixon highlighted the club’s strong coaching structure and welcoming atmosphere for young athletes. “Our lessons are planned age appropriately. We work on skill development and fitness and the kids are just having a great time.”

She encouraged families and aspiring rugby players to join the club, noting that registration remains open despite the season already beginning.

“Why don’t you come along to Honey Badgers and we’ll be excited to welcome you. Our teams start as little as six-year-old upwards. Our season has started, but guess what? It’s not too late to join, and our first set of matches starts at the end of June.”
