SEBOKENG.- Sebokeng Police have welcomed the court sentencing of Tait Michael Rathabe for a fatal stabbing that followed a row over building materials in Zone 17.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Sebokeng Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane, said the case dates back to December 2022 when builder Ellias Kodisang was hired to remove a precast wall and corrugated iron sheets in exchange for the materials.

Someone else helped them access the yard.

With the neighbour’s permission, the items were temporarily stored at the suspect’s home.

On December 15, 2022, after finding a buyer and arranging a truck for collection, the victim and his associates went to collect the goods.

When the suspect could not be reached by phone, someone else helped them access the yard. The suspect arrived while the items were being loaded and accused them of trespassing.

An altercation then ensued.

“The suspect demanded a storage fee, which the victims indicated had not previously been agreed upon,” said Mokhachane.

During the argument, Thabiso Thulo (39) insulted the suspect, who then fetched a knife from his house.

The suspect stabbed Thulo several times in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect then attacked the second victim, Kodisang, and stabbed him with the same knife.”

Sergeant Tshidiso Phale led the police investigation, which gathered the necessary evidence to link the suspect to the crimes.

Following several court appearances, Rathabe was convicted and sentenced at the Sebokeng Magistrates’ Court.

On August 27, Rathabe was sentenced as follows:

– Murder: 15 years’ direct imprisonment.

– Assault GBH (grievous bodily harm): 6 months’ direct imprisonment.

– The accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

– The court further ordered that, should the accused become eligible for parole, the victim and the deceased’s next of kin must be consulted.

Mokhachane said that the Sebokeng SAPS welcomes the sentence and commends the investigating officer for ensuring that the matter was thoroughly investigated and brought before the court.

Money or other matters must be resolved peacefully and through lawful channels.

“This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can result when disputes escalate into violence. Members of the community are urged not to take the law into their own hands. Disagreements over property, money or other matters must be resolved peacefully and through lawful channels.”

The police appealed to community members to exercise restraint when confronted with conflict and to seek assistance before situations escalate.

“Anger management and appropriate conflict-resolution interventions can prevent arguments from turning into violent and potentially fatal confrontations. Those who resort to violence must understand that criminal acts have serious consequences and that the law will take its course. There is no justification for taking another person’s life or deliberately inflicting serious injuries because of a disagreement. The conclusion of this matter brings a measure of closure to the family of the deceased and the surviving victim, who endured the traumatic consequences of this violent incident.”
