According to a witness, Bapela had his mobile phone and earphones in his hand when the trio approached him. Seconds later (around 7:40) the school boy was attacked.In the feud that ensued, Bapela was stabbed in the chest and back. After the incident, the robbers ran away.
The witness said that he carried Bapela who was bleeding profusely all the way to Mumford Street where he called for help.Medics tried to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The robbers got away with his earphones, cellphone and school bag.
Police Spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said that they applaud Detective Constable Mokone Mavundla who managed to get convictions for the three suspects who committed the murder and theft. One of the suspects was apprehended in Potchefstroom, North West.
The accused Phindile Sakate (20) was sentenced to 12 years while Neo Maphisa (23) and Jabulani Maduna (22) received a 5-year suspended sentence for theft of a cellphone and a schoolbag.
“We hope this sentencing sends a message to the criminals out there, especially young people who are involved in crime, that at the end, justice is served and you pay for your own actions, with or without your friends.”
