Public Protector to investigate Sonderwater Housing Project
Kingsol Chabalala:The project which began in 2011, and is administered by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, was expected to build 935 houses. In 2013 the project came to an abrupt halt leaving beneficiaries in the dark, as no explanation was provided as to why construction had stopped.
DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala writes:
Tomorrow, Friday 25 November 2016, the Public Protector, as a result of DA intervention, will be conducting an oversight visit to the Sonderwater Housing Project in Emfuleni.
The project which began in 2011, and is administered by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, was expected to build 935 houses. In 2013 the project came to an abrupt halt leaving beneficiaries in the dark, as no explanation was provided as to why construction had stopped.
In 2014, the construction company that won the tender to carry out work on the project, Rirothe Construction, was replaced by a number of other companies who were appointed to complete the project.
This has adversely affected the delivery of houses to residents.
Millions of rands have already been spent to date with very little to show for it.
The DA believes that local residents have been severely affected by gross maladministration and abuse of public funds.
We will assist the Office of the Public Protector to get to the bottom of this matter and ensure that action is taken against those who have been found guilty of wrong doing.
